The Mpaju GalaPlay Extravaganza Festival 2024 reached its thrilling conclusion on 21st December 2024, with an epic derby between Mpaju FC Queens (a.k.a Mpaju FC Atinisu) and ICON FC Queens. Hosted at the Magereza Ruanda grounds, the festival was a true celebration of women’s football, community, and sportsmanship, showcasing the vibrant talent in Mbeya.
ICON FC Queens: Pioneers of
Women’s Football
No celebration of women’s
football in Mbeya would be complete without acknowledging the incredible
contributions of ICON FC Queens. As the pioneers of women’s football in
the region, their legacy is unparalleled, and their efforts have laid the
foundation for the success of events like the GalaPlay Festival.
While ICON FC Queens showed
resilience throughout the tournament, culminating in a hard-fought draw in the
final (0-0), their penalty shootout loss (5-4) to Mpaju FC Queens added
another chapter to their friendly rivalry. ICON, you’ve done it all, but one
thing remains elusive—defeating Mpaju FC Queens! 😉 Nevertheless, we
salute your sportsmanship and your ongoing contributions to the development of
women’s football in Mbeya and beyond.
It was ICON FC Queens
themselves who made the bold request for next year’s tournament to be expanded
to include the whole region. In response, Mpaju Sports Centre is
thrilled to announce that the Mpaju GalaPlay Extravaganza Festival (MGEF) 2025
will indeed grow to that magnitude. While Mpaju Sports Centre has hosted larger
events before, this expansion is a heartfelt gesture of appreciation for ICON
FC’s recognition of our efforts in growing women’s football. So, ICON, stay
tuned—next year’s festival will be even bigger and better!
Prisons FC Queens: The Rising
Contenders
Another standout team this year
was Prisons FC Queens, who showcased their growing strength with a 0-0
draw against Mpaju FC Queens and a narrow 1-2 loss to ICON FC Queens. Backed by
the Tanzania Prisons Services, they were not only formidable on the
pitch but also exemplary hosts.
Their contribution to the
festival went beyond the game, as they provided excellent infrastructure, first
aid readiness, and unwavering support. A special shoutout to the Manager of
Magereza Ruanda grounds for waiving fees just to let this tournament happen,
making the festival even more accessible. Prisons FC Queens, your growth is
inspiring, and we are counting on you to lead the charge for Mbeya’s first-ever
team in the Tanzania Women Premier League.
Regional Support: A Festival
of Unity
This year’s festival would not
have been possible without the collaboration and support of teams from across
the region and the country. A big thank you to Kyela Princess from Kyela
District and Mapinduzi Queens from Njombe Region for allowing your
players to be part of tournament, and we look forward to welcoming your teams
next year.
To all other districts and
regions around Mbeya: consider this your official call to action! The
expanded tournament in 2025 will be an incredible platform to showcase your
talent and compete at the highest level of regional women’s football. Let’s
join hands to elevate Mbeya’s footballing standards and bring more talent into
the national spotlight.
Looking Ahead: Bigger, Better,
